PROTECT NEIGHBORS’ RIGHTS TO LIVE IN A SAFE & PEACEFUL FLORIDA COMMUNITY

Airbnb Tries To Silence Local Governments With S.B. 1128

Airbnb’s legislation, Senate Bill 1128 sponsored by Senator Manny Diaz, Jr. would stop local governments from enacting laws to protect neighborhoods from the negative impacts of vacation rentals.

7 Million Homeowners Say No To S.B. 1128

Our Neighborhoods coalition, representing more than seven million homeowners and stakeholders across the Sunshine State, urge Florida legislators to vote NO on Airbnb’s legislation, Senate Bill 1128. It’s time for Florida lawmakers to protect NEIGHBORS’ RIGHTS to live in a safe and peaceful community. We don’t want to see our communities consumed by the criminal activity brought on by the infiltration of vacation rentals.

Florida Families Deserve Peaceful Neighborhoods

When a family invests in a new home and neighborhood, they want to live in a community of neighbors not a community with a revolving door of strangers that come with disruptive and even violent out-of-control parties. Many senior citizens, who moved to Florida to enjoy their twilight years in a community of other retirees, are being negatively impacted by vacation rentals.

Commercial operators are taking advantage of short-term rentals for their own profit. They aren’t vested in our community. They aren’t following health and safety regulations. They aren’t even paying taxes like all other local businesses. Wild parties, serious safety issues, a weekly rotation of complete strangers and a declining community fabric all come with the surge of commercial short-term rental properties.

Protect Our Neighborhoods

Local governments must be able to protect their neighborhoods and housing supply for permanent residents.

Protecting true home sharing of primary residences, while stopping the unregulated conversion of residential homes into short-term rentals by commercial interests, is a common-sense and much-needed protection in Florida.

This is about common sense protections for our Florida neighborhoods. Individuals and families should absolutely be able to rent out their primary residence, allowing true home sharing to occur.  But this process is being taken advantage of by commercial interests and action must be taken.

Florida Voters Want Local Governments To Enact Laws To Protect Neighborhoods

According to a poll released January 2020:

  • Seven out of 10 Florida voters said local governments should set short-term rental laws.
  • 75 percent of Florida voters said they wanted their local elected officials in charge, while just 12 percent of those polled said they wanted vacation rental directives to come from the state capital.
